Retro Play Co. Vintage Toy & TCG Buying Guide
How We Value Your Collection
At Retro Play Co., we are passionate about buying vintage toys, trading card games, and even LEGO collections! To help you understand how we assess the vintage toy value of your items and provide you the best offers, we employ a transparent, market-based pricing system designed to give you more value than larger national franchises.
Our Buying & Drop-Off Hours
To ensure your collection receives the attention it deserves, we appraise and accept trade-ins during specific hours:
On-the-Spot Appraisals: Wednesday – Friday | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Weekend Drop-Offs: Saturdays | 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Note: Weekend counter appraisals are unavailable so our staff can focus entirely on retail shoppers.
Tired of Hidden Valuation Percentages?
Many hobby shops and regional chains protect their profit margins by keeping their payout percentages hidden. They encourage you to trust their informal "blind" offers.
At Retro Play Co., we prioritize transparency. We analyze real-time market data for trading card game appraisals and provide you with access to the prices we see (like TCGPlayer Market Price and recent eBay sales). We clearly communicate exactly what percentage we pay, ensuring you never have to guess or worry about arbitrary lowball offers.
Why Trade with Us? (The Local Advantage)
As a locally owned independent shop rather than a rigid corporate franchise, we have the flexibility to offer you better deals, quicker service, and fair appraisals than national chains:
Top Dollar for Cards: We pay an industry-leading 65-70% cash for desirable TCG singles and up to 80% for rare, sealed products.
Higher Payouts on Rare LEGO: Our payments can reach up to 45% cash and 55% credit for licensed minifigures, consistently outperforming franchise averages.
The "Cherry-Pick" Promise: Other stores may purchase large bins at a flat, low bulk rate. We actively sift through your bins to identify and pay top dollar for the best three figures before weighing the remainder.
We Buy by the Pound, Not the Gallon: We use a digital scale to weigh bulk LEGO to ensure you get compensated for every precise ounce, avoiding inconsistent volumetric estimates.
Fast 48-Hour Guarantee: Don’t let your collection remain idle for a week. We promise to provide an official offer within 48 hours of drop-off.
Trading Card Game (TCG) Valuation
Our trading card game appraisal process includes analysis of real-time market data (like TCGPlayer Market Price and recent eBay sold listings) to form fair cash offers for your card collections:
TCG Singles / Hits: Typically, we offer 70% of the current market value for confirmed high-demand cards.
Sealed TCG Merchandise: We provide 70% to 80% of market value for untampered booster boxes, elite trainer boxes (ETBs), and vintage sealed packs.
Toy Condition & Rarity Categories
High-Demand & Mint Condition (Up to 50% Cash): This includes rare, carded action figures, factory-sealed vehicle boxes, and pristine vintage "grails."
Standard Stock & Loose Toys (30% – 40% Cash): Our offer covers open, loose, or complete action figures and playsets (like Star Wars, TMNT, Transformers, G.I. Joe, He-Man, etc.)
Damaged, Common, or Bulk Lots (10% – 20% Cash): Items with missing signature accessories, those with significant wear, or mass-produced 90s toys (like standard holiday Barbies or Beanie Babies).
LEGO Appraisal Rules
1. Loose, Unsorted LEGO
We don’t count individual pieces! We weigh your bulk LEGO on an accurate digital scale for the most precise value.
Cash: $1.00 – $3.00 per pound.
Store Credit: $4.00 – $5.00 per pound.
2. Loose Minifigures
Generic Figures (City, Ninjago, Friends): $0.25 – $0.50 cash each.
Licensed Figures (Star Wars, Marvel, Retro Space/Castle): We verify the official LEGO stamp and offer an aggressive 45% cash or 55% store credit based on the recent eBay sold value.
3. New & Sealed LEGO Boxes
In Production: 50% of current retail MSRP Cash, or 65% Store Credit.
Retired / Out of Print: 50% – 55% Cash, or 60% – 65% Store Credit based on the 6-month eBay sales average.
❌ What We Don't Buy (Let’s Save Everyone a Trip!)
To keep our store focused on high-quality collectibles and manage our limited shelf space, we do not purchase the following items. Please review this list before bringing in your items:
No Sports Cards: We are not involved in the sports card market and do not buy or accept any sport-related trading cards.
Damaged or Broken Items: We avoid purchases of toys with broken parts, severe discoloration, or wear.
Bootlegs or Knockoffs: No counterfeit TCG cards, fake LEGO pieces, or unbranded replica toys are accepted. We thoroughly inspect everything to spot fakes instantly.
Incomplete Modern Toys: We cannot buy modern action figures missing key accessories or components.
Mass-Produced 90s/00s Novelties: We do not buy standard holiday Barbies, Beanie Babies, or fast-food kid’s meal toys.
Overstocked Inventory: Items that we already have in plentiful quantities on our retail shelves.
Important Rules to Keep in Mind
Large Collections & Drop-Offs: If you bring in a sizeable collection or multiple bins of toys, we cannot appraise them immediately. (Larger collections must be left for evaluation, guaranteeing a call or text quote within 48 hours.)
The Completeness Rule: Missing vital parts or accessories drastically decreases an item's value. Incomplete 80s/90s vehicles or playsets drop to 20% of their complete market value due to the high cost and difficulty of finding replacements.
Large Collection Payouts: To operate our retail registers smoothly, large collection buyouts will be compensated via secure digital payments (Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, or Cash App) rather than cash from the drawer.
Policies: Bringing items in does not mean we are obligated to purchase them. Offers are based entirely on current inventory levels, store space, and local demand.
